the Stumblng Tumblr took the above photo earlier today
it shows some of Martin Place, Sydney
the structure to the extreme right in the photo is part of The Cenotaph, erected in honour of WWI Australian and New Zealand military personnel (the ANZACs)
in Australia, APR 25 each year is celebrated as Anzac Day and ceremonies, including a veterans’ parade, are held
The Cenotaph plays an important part in such ceremonies
the Stumblng Tumblr took the particular photo above only because he wants you to compare it to another that he’s very recently found, which is displayed immediately below:
the Stumblng Tumblr was, to use a good old Aussie expression, gobsmacked when he saw it— military men marching past The Cenotaph giving the fascist salute?!
you can find the photo immediately above and the explanation for it here (it’s the tenth photo in the series)
the photo was taken on Anzac Day 1937; in WWI, the Italians had been allies of the Australians and they were not to become enemies for some time yet, so there was nothing surprising about Italian former military personnel participating in the Anzac Day ceremonies
those giving the fascist salute were obviously Italian former military personnel who supported Mussolini (who, after all, had been in power in Italy for fifteen years already at the time)
it’s not clear to the Stumblng Tumblr whether all were giving the salute; perhaps they were and those who were unsympathetic to Mussolini (assuming there were any) were excluded from the contingent
